A new foundation for Szum charts

September 26, 2026

Charts now start with what you want to show. Choose column, bar, line, area, scatter, or pie, then bind data to named roles instead of assembling a list of marks. The same chart definition works across the web editor, API, MCP, Figma, and interactive embeds.

Author the whole chart

The web editor and Figma plugin now expose the decisions that make a chart useful: data shape and ordering, axes, native labels, fixed or calculated reference lines, and annotations attached to a point, category, slice, or coordinate. Notes stay with their subject as the chart changes. Source is still there when you want to edit the definition directly.

Explore the chart types, annotations, and reference lines.

Keep the design across outputs

Curated Light and Dark color schemes and broader multilingual font support carry the same visual choices into SVG and PNG images, interactive embeds, and editable Figma charts. One chart document carries its data, presentation, size, and output choices through validation and rendering.

Bring existing charts forward

Supported 2026-03-20 charts, including saved charts, continue to open. The web editor and Figma Source offer Migrate chart for convertible older definitions. When conversion is unavailable, those controls explain why and leave the original definition untouched.

For developers

This is a breaking authoring change: the public API and MCP tools now use the document-based chart model. SDK v4 is the matching major release and requires Node.js 24. Read the compatibility guide or update an API integration.

Logarithmic scales

August 5, 2026

Szum now supports explicit base-10 logarithmic scales. Positive-value validation and shared rendering keep every output aligned.

Validation and Review

August 4, 2026

Szum now checks whether a chart is both well-formed and renderable before it reaches an image, embed, saved chart, or Figma canvas. Review brings errors, warnings, and explicit suggestions to the web editor and Figma, while the API and MCP server return the same structured result.

Dark mode

August 2, 2026

Szum now follows your system appearance across the site, docs, editor, Studio, and account, with light and dark modes available manually. Chart themes stay independent, so changing the interface never changes an exported chart.

Open the editor.

Axes, without the JSON

August 1, 2026

The web editor and Figma plugin now expose axis visibility, titles, scale types, ranges, tick formatting, and category order as first-class controls. Both write the same portable chart definition.

Open the web editor or get the Figma plugin.

Smoother chart changes

July 26, 2026

Interactive charts now move smoothly between compatible states. Bars, dots, axes, and labels preserve their identity as data and layouts change.

Exact canvas sizing

July 25, 2026

Set an exact width and height in the web editor. PNG, SVG, and Figma output use the authored canvas, while interactive embeds remain responsive.

Open the editor or read about sizing.

July 25, 2026

The new examples gallery shows complete charts across themes, chart types, and editorial approaches – each with its own shareable page.

Meet Creator

July 24, 2026

Creator brings custom themes, Google Fonts, and attribution-free publishing to independent makers, with a smaller step between Free and Pro.

Szum, inside Claude

July 23, 2026

The official Claude connector renders interactive charts in the conversation, exports PNG or SVG, and saves the charts worth keeping to Studio.

Better typography, everywhere

July 22, 2026

Charts now carry locale metadata and measure multilingual text consistently across server images, browser charts, and Figma.

Your chart library, available to agents

July 19, 2026

MCP clients can find, open, inspect, update, rename, and delete saved charts. Updates keep published URLs stable and protect newer editor drafts.

See the MCP tools.

A home for work in progress

June 11, 2026

Studio and the web editor now separate drafts from published charts, so you can keep editing without changing the version already in use.

Open Studio or learn about the editor.

Figma, rebuilt around the canvas

May 31, 2026

The Figma plugin now renders locally with live previews, auto-sizing, native undo, and a richer data editor. Inserted charts remain editable Figma layers.

Get the Figma plugin.

Interactive embeds

May 20, 2026

One saved chart can now power a responsive chart with tooltips and interactive legends – using the same design as its static image.

Read about interactive embeds.

Saved charts

April 29, 2026

Save a chart once and publish it through a stable image URL without exposing an API key. Revoke it centrally without changing every place it appears.

One config, three outputs

March 29, 2026

The Chart Image API, first MCP server, and first Figma plugin brought the core Szum idea together: define a chart once, then render it for code, agents, or design.

Start with the Chart Image API.

Chart contract versions

Config version and document version identify one chart-contract generation, not a product release. They advance together when the authored contract changes after release. See Versioning.

2026-09-26

The current chart config version. Choose one of six purpose-driven chart types with its semantic field roles, labels, references, annotations, and chart-specific presentation. A complete ChartDocument adds data, size, presentation, and output settings around that data-free config. Use the same document for validation, rendering, and saving.

Supported 2026-03-20 configs remain accepted where documented and are converted to 2026-09-26 before use. See older config compatibility.

2026-03-20

The first chart config version. It began with barY, barX, line, dot, text, ruleX, and ruleY, plus SVG and PNG output, sizing, axes, themes, and top-level data.
